Tarot Deck Maintenance

You’ll often see me ghost over and over on social media as a method of personal energetic maintenance. It’s not that I don’t want to reply to messages or see your photos, it’s that I want to interact with you SO MUCH that it distracts me from what I NEED to be doing for my highest benefit.

So I ghost. Everyone. Including my parents, ha! I grab a book and find the nearest tree to lean against or beach to lay on. I like to do my hippie cosmic woo woo shit in peace without explanation or justification because it helps me recharge. This is necessary so I can come back full of enthusiasm towards my passion projects.

Likewise, your deck needs some down time. Whether you’re reading for just yourself regularly or you’re a busy professional Reader, please consider this article as a friendly reminder that your companions need rest too.

Whether you’re new to Tarot or a complete Pro, we’re all guilty of forgetting to take care of ourselves and our tools appropriately. Please consider the following tips for the maintenance of your decks to keep them operating at their highest energy levels!

These are some methods of maintenance I personally use so please feel free to incorporate them into your practice or to modify them as needed to fit your unique needs.

TIPS FOR TAROT DECK MAINTENANCE

Sunlight

Getting an hour of Sun a day has real life, tangible benefits ranging from glowing skin to lowering blood pressure so guess what– it’s beneficial for your Tarot deck too!

If your deck seems to be running low on energy or the messages aren’t as straightforward in tone as usual, take it as sign of drainage. Rest your deck on a window sill to absorb some sunlight and your deck will be illuminating the Truth again in no time. Give it about an hour!

Communication

This is a friendly reminder to Pro Tarot Readers but especially important for newer Readers: People don’t tell you their deepest, darkest secrets right off the bat. It takes time to build trust, right?

So then, please take the time to just talk to your deck for fun. Ask it how it feels and pull a card. Ask how it prefers to rest and recover, then pull a card. Sometimes your deck just wants to be acknowledged and appreciated. To maintain a fluent connection between yourself and your deck, talk to it!

Tap Out

This is mostly for professional Tarot Readers but….sometimes your deck just has to tap out. I learned this the hard way when starting out as a professional. I had only one deck to read for my clients AND myself so my poor deck just about HAD it with me.

If you find yourself in a similar scenario, PLEASE buy yourself another deck. Your first deck will be relieved, not jealous. And this way, you won’t have to close up shop when your deck just isn’t feeling it anymore.

Cleansing

Ok, here is where it gets personal. This heavily depends on you as a Reader. Some Readers prefer not to cleanse their decks at all. I cleanse them whenever I feel they need it.

There are various methods of cleansing ranging from smudging sprays, bell ringing, hand clapping, smoke cleansing etc.

The ones I find most effective are thanking your decks out loud for their work and resting your black or white crystal of choice on top of it for a few hours. I personally recommend Black Tourmaline, Black Obsidian and Selenite.

About once a month, I’ll do deep cleanses with sage or various herbs I have on hand.

How often and your method of cleasing is an intuitive practice in itself so listen to your intuition. If it’s time to cleanse, you’ll know it.

Candles

Lighting candles with accompanying petitions for ancestral favors/assistance is a common practice so feel free to include your Tarot decks in your gratitude rituals.

If you don’t have a gratitude ritual, you can still use candles to re-charge your Tarot deck. Light your favorite candle and place your Tarot deck beside it. Allow it to rest near the warmth so it can pull energy from the flame to re-generate itself. Usually an hour or two does the trick.

Keeping it short and keeping it sweet. These are my tips and as always, I hope sharing them sets you up for success and abundance! Amen!
